Conveyors, indexing tables and packaging cells often combine 24 V DC sensors, solenoid outputs, pulse trains and HMI recipes. Selection begins with point count and motion expectations, then checks scan time, high-speed I/O and Modbus addressing. A distributed I/O layout shortens field wiring and isolates local faults, while a centralized rack simplifies program ownership and spare strategy. Neither is universally preferable: cable distance, downtime isolation and maintenance capability decide the trade-off.

Pump skids and treatment packages need analog level or pressure signals, motor starter interfaces and stable communications to supervisory systems. Cabinet IP rating, surge environment and separation between control and power wiring require attention. Remote sites may favor local autonomy because a network interruption cannot stop basic control, but centralized supervision remains valuable for alarms and energy reporting. The design must define fallback states before choosing the network architecture.

Machine builders balance compact footprint, repeatable wiring and service availability across destination markets. A DVP controller may fit the I/O total yet still require review of expansion power, instruction set, encoder frequency and firmware consistency. CE or UL documentation is verified by exact component and market; the presence of one recognized component does not certify the completed machine. Program backups and revision control are treated as deliverables, not afterthoughts.

Lighting, ventilation and plant-room controls may require scheduled operation, energy metering and integration through Modbus TCP or a gateway. Controller selection accounts for panel space, service access and the ownership boundary between the PLC and building-management system. Direct integration reduces hardware count, while a gateway can isolate protocol changes and simplify responsibility. Cybersecurity policy, update practice and network segmentation remain site-level decisions.
